Tuesday Practice News & Updates

Lots of news came out of today’s practice.

  • AnnArbor.com has a couple videos posted from today’s presser with Rich Rodriguez.

  • Here are some news and notes from MGOBlue.com…

    • Quarterback Denard Robinson scampered 68 yards on a broken play during third down drills.

    • On a first-and-10 drill from their own two-yard line, running back Kevin Grady burst through a hole in the right side of the line for a 45-yard gain.

    • During the team’s overtime drill, the offense scored three touchdowns with the defense collecting two stops. A third scoring chance was thwarted on a blocked field goal attempt.

    • Quarterback Nick Sheridan tossed an 18-yard TD pass to wideout Greg Mathews on a third-down play during the first overtime series.

    • On the second OT series, quarterback Tate Forcier tossed a pass to wideout LaTerryal Savoy on a receiver screen and Savoy followed his blockers to the end zone for a 25-yard score.

    • The third and final overtime score came on an eight-yard run up the middle by back Michael Shaw.

    • Converted cornerback Teric Jones collected a pass breakup on a fourth down play that ended an offensive possession during the extra session drill.

    • During his press briefing today, Rich Rodriguez mentioned that he would be holding a student body walk-on tryout after the start of classes on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

    • Rodriguez mentioned that Ricky Barnum, Thomas Gordon and Mark Moundros had minor injuries and would be day-to-day, while Fitzgerald Toussaint would miss a few weeks following a shoulder injury suffered last week.

    • Rodriguez later added that cornerback Donovan Warren would sit out practice Tuesday and would be day-to-day after suffering an injury on Monday.

    • Former Wolverines Jim Betts and Drew Henson attended practice.

  • It appears as though it is official that Jason Forcier will not be joining the Wolverines for one last year of eligibility – but he does plan on spending his time in Ann Arbor to help out young Tate Forcier. All according to Annarbor.com. Here’s what I found rather interesting from the story…

At issue, he said, was an NCAA rule that requires transfer graduate students seeking immediate eligibility to enroll in a program unavailable at their former school.

Michigan and Stanford offer similar graduate degrees, and Forcier, with time an obstacle, couldn’t find a suitable one-year program he could finish while on scholarship.

“I was hoping, I was being optimistic about it,” Forcier said. “But things happen for a reason.”

While he waits to begin a career in sales or marketing, Forcier, who played two seasons at Michigan before transferring to Stanford, said he’ll live with his brother “for a portion of the season” to help him get acclimated to life as a high-profile college student.

Who in the NCAA is coming up with these rules? Not that I’m arguing in favor of Jason – but it’s just one of those rules that makes you wonder.

  • More from the onslaught of coverage today pouring from AnnArbor.com – somewhat of an unnecessary article about how people shouldn’t be counting out Nick Sheridan from the starting QB position “because it’s happened before”. We are done comparing this year’s quarterback situation to last years – because it is like comparing the Detroit Pistons roster at the start of last season to the start of this coming season. Totally different players – same offense philosophy on the field. Here’s Nick answering some questions from the media…

  • Dave Birkett writes on why Rich Rod thinks Mike Martin is such an important part of the Wolverine’s defensive unit this year.

“Mike is a guy that, he’s probably as important a piece to our defense as anybody we have over there,” Rodriguez said. “He’s a guy that had a great summer, very explosive, and we need him to play well and we need him to stay healthy.”
