Only Denard Robinson Makes This Play
Denard didn’t score a touchdown, make a completion, get the first down, or gain over ten yards on this play. But this is one of those plays that only Denard Robinson can make. Denard ran for over 1,700 hundred yards last season, so obviously the dude has had his fair share of plays that are kinda plays only he can make. The best example of what I am about to show you is this from the Bowling Green game, where Denard strung out the defenders, let them get closer to him, then he busted out.
On Saturday night Under The Lights, Denard was drawing Michigan closer to the end-zone for a score that his team desperately needed. The play was 2nd and Goal from Notre Dame’s nine yard line. Denard was up under center and executed the play-action that Al Borges dialed up for him.
So the play has started from the left hash. Denard fakes the hand off to Shaw (I think) and then starts heading towards the wide side of the field.
Multiple Notre Dame defenders will be giving hesitant, frightful chase of the great #16.
Denard surveys his options and goes through his reads as he draws closer to the sideline.
Denard makes up his mind that he’s not throwing, he’s going to kick it in gear towards the goal line. Now, at this point, that’s four ND defenders that should close in on him at say, what the seven yard line?
Wait a sec, Denard puts two of the four ND defenders in his rear view and proceeds towards the end zone.
Denard Denarded his way to the half yard line. Notice the ND defenders near that seven yard line! Brian Kelly probably went all grapeface on these two for playin’ grab-ass.
Here’s the play. Roll the tape.
