Happy Monday ya’ll, the kickoff to this 2011 season that is riddled with opportunity and excitement is upon us. I leave you with a great quote from Dhani Jones’ twitter feed this morning…

“There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle for less.” – #55 Dhani Jones

[NOTE: Both regular visitors and newbies - the links on the right under "Articles of Interest" are constantly updated from what I find interesting or noteworthy from across the internets...]

Here we go. Since mid-week last week there has been the Big Ten Media Day & Kickoff Luncheon, the BBQ at the Big House for recruits, and another nice commitment for next year’s class in Toledo Whitmer product Chris Wormley. So, with only eight days until Fall Camp gets under way there is a lot happening and it’s an exciting time… (also, Michigan hoops picked up it’s 3rd commit for 2013 in Zak Irvin – who attended my high school alma mater Hamilton Southeastern outside of Indy)

Brady Hoke’s Vocabulary Selections

The evidence is there. You know what you are getting when Brady Hoke hits up the podium. Day one, when Brady Hoke was introduced as Michigan’s Head Coach, I had never seen the man blurt out a single “ya know uhhh” in my life. Quickly, it was evident that Hoke had a handful of go-to words when discussing the future and essence of Michigan football. Words like accountability, and toughness. And legacies, tradition, and global. And Michigan Men, integrity, and respect.

Hoke’s dream job was and is Michigan. This past week Hoke implemented many of his oft-used buzzwords. Sampling…

On the team adjusting… and attitude that you have everyday, and the toughness that you have to have to play this great game, and the discipline and the accountability will say a lot about how we end up as a football team.

On mentoring players… When they graduate from Michigan, they will be great husbands and fathers and people that go back into their communities and do a tremendous job…

On Ohio… The rivalry with Ohio is the biggest rivalry in sport.

On the recruiting dominance of late… This might sound arrogant, and if it is it is, were Michigan. We have a global education and we are the winningest program in the history of college football.

Some general response… We want guys that will play with a toughness, and an accountability and a team for each other…

Hoke has done everything possible to position himself for success, so far. Admittedly, from both sides (do yourself a solid – spare yourself from the comments section if you choose to read that post from Eleven Warriors), Hoke has done more for the Ohio State rivalry than Rich Rod did over the course of his three years. AND, Hoke has dominated recruiting in the most pleasurable fashion for Michigan fans, meaning he’s recruiting the piss out of Ohio and Michigan.

Buzzwords and all, early signs are pointing towards a bright future with Hoke.

Charles and Denard Hype Video…

The Hype Videos should come out in droves in a week or two. Here’s one full of #2 and #16. Thanks to flexfit0.

Notre Dame Wants to Win More

Noderdame. Well, some say Notre Dame. But Noderdame’s administration is easing up on things to make life easier for Brian Kelly, things like academic standards. This article talks of Notre Dame’s administration giving Brian Kelly some more strings to pull to get back into the spotlight and be decent every year. Former unsuccessful ND coach Bob Davie chimes in…

“He’s in a very enviable situation,” former Irish coach Bob Davie said. “Because we all had the same pressure to win. We just had to do it in a probably more difficult manner.”

If you need to brush up on what ND will look like this season – check out Scout’s Preview. Per usual, ND fans “can’t find a game on the schedule that looks like a loss” because it’s Kelly’s second year and blah blah blah. Until it happens, you just have to laugh when Beano Cook gets on ESPN Radio and says ND will go undefeated!

Dance dance…dance dance. Michigan be dancing! There is no longer doubt that T Hardaway, D Morris and the rest of this ridiculously young and resilient team will be waiting to learn their NCAA First Round destination spot on Selection Sunday with their bags already packed.

You cannot not be excited about this season’s young hoops squad. John Beilein has tossed his positivity blanket over the minds of this cohesive group. A group that seems to respond time and time again at the ideal time. Michigan made big shots yesterday to clamp down on the Illinois lead and put momentum in Michigan’s favor.

An unspoken confidence is coming to the surface more and more as Michigan grinds out tough Big10 wins. With the emergence of Tim Hardaway Jr.’s game, I think a lot of people are overlooking just how impressive and efficient Darius Morris has been. Guys like Evan Smotrycz are hitting huge threes when Stu Douglass is no where to be found. Stu can put in the quietest 36 minutes you’ve ever seen.

The point is that this team continues to overcome, impress, have fun, and win.

Michigan basketball & relevancy.
Now. Now is a great time for Michigan basketball to surge forward into the NCAA tournament – after nobody gave this team a chance before the season and after the six straight losses. But, now this team has star, NBA player potential that are fun and entertaining to watch. They take bold shots and show great, genuine emotion out there.

The college basketball world will most likely learn more about this team as they play the top-ranked Buckeyes today and put their focus on Michigan basketball for the two-hour long Fab Five documentary tomorrow evening.

This team is bringing back Michigan basketball fans that have pushed any remote interest in the program under the rug over the past decade of not winning. For the first time in a long time, I have buddies texting me during games “Did I really just see DMo do that!!” ..because fans are coming out of the woodwork. Because talent on the floor is offering up plays that only talented players can make.

As a Michigan fan, I’m really enjoying this unexpected success and I think Beilein should be receiving some kind of coach of the year award.

Count on the comeback.
It’s almost routine that when Michigan falls behind by that 8 to 13 point margin – that they are going to buckle down on D, knock down some shots, and almost quietly creep back into the game. Before you know it, down 12 turns into down 7, 7 turns to 4, then tied, AND THEN T HARDAWAY BURIES A TREY BOMB!! It’s been a lot of fun to watch and this is a legitimate scary team to face for most in the round of 64. Or, 65 or 68, whatever it is now.

Darius Morris gets it done.
Can Darius Morris create his own shot in the paint or what? His jerky stop and starts and quickness allow him to get looks at generally high percentage shots. Darius also showed incredible body control and pivot skills under the basket and on the breakaway layup. Vid courtesy of the always solid Five Key Plays from UMHoops.com.

Regardless of what happens against Ohio State today, Michigan should be looking at an opportunity to make some noise in the NCAA tournament. And I’ll be on the edge of my seat for every play… Go Blue!

Today’s presser included Rich Rodriguez, Kelvin Grady, Darryl Stonum, Taylor Lewan, JT Floyd, and Ryan Van Bergen.

Rich Rodriguez…

…On injuries / housekeeping stuff

Denard only knee bruise, should practice; fitz has shoulder; carvin/herron could play; shaw (knee) day to day; Tate (quad) fine.

Mike williams has had multiple concussions. Very concerned about that.

Herron might play this week. Mike Williams still out with concussion. Mike Shaw sprained his knee, is day-to-day.

On Denard: Bruised knee. Limited today in practice. Said he hopes DR will do everything in practice Tuesday. Said DR will play Saturday

Toussaint “did something” to his shoulder. Trying to figure out what. Hoping Carvin Johnson “Will be able to do more.”

RR said Courtney Avery will switch to No. 5 “there’s no controversy with that” he said joking. He was No. 9, got called for penalty.

RR: wish denard would’ve stepped out of bounds.

RR said both Forcier and Gardner are No. 2 QB: “We’ll see how they are practicing this week.”

On QBs/offense: “Other guys can run the offense. Denard is special.”

RR said it’s tough to work on tackling during the season, only Tuesdays are physical practice. Thought Sat. “we tackled better.”

…On Indiana & BGSU

On Indiana’s receivers “Big guys, very athletic, they can run..” “it’s a concern for us”

RR: we’ve got a starter – Denard – and two No. 2 guys. Who comes in when during a game depends on practice.

RR: Pistol offense, if they execute it they can get some big plays.

RR: similar indiana team to what michigan saw last year. Scores a lot of points

RR: lewan played well but still fighting for a spot.

Huge game for both team, both undefeated, crowd will be in to it

Had some different nickel packages that allowed both Courtney Avery and Cullen Christian to get a lot of playing time

Playing at Notre Dame was great road experience for the younger guys on the team.

On taking the opening kickoff – “we usually defer”. On only a few rare occasions, because of weather or something, they’ve taken the opening kickoff. Prefers to get the ball after halftime.

On Mike Martin – having a great season, is playing a lot of snaps, but he’s been dominant in both the run and pass.

On D Line – got some pressure and were solid against the run. Greg Banks and Ryan Van Bergen have both been pretty solid.

Overall defensively, played more aggressive against BGSU, but will be tested big time against Indiana

In light of Big Ten season starting – everything gets cranked up a notch and the team understands that.

RR: doesn’t remind his players about what happened last year. References Lion King…

On playing Alabama in 2002 – nothing has been signed, just conversation at this point.

Big Ten is stronger this year than it has been in years from top to bottom.

The young DB’s have been a pleasant surprise on defense. Have played 13 true freshman through 4 games and most of them have been on defense.

On having 3 guys back on punt returns – wanted to get guys back there to play the rollout punt that BGSU had shown in previous games.

On not kicking the field goal on the last 4th and 3 – wanted to get Devin and those guys experience on getting the first down. Just wanted to run the offense.

On linebacking play: Roh has been solid. Mouton played well in every game, but not UMass.

Have high expectations for the LB’s – Mouton probably most explosive and Roh very versatile.

Kelvin Grady…

On his TD called back: “It happens, I smiled, things happen”

Feels very comfortable in this system. He’s played three different positions and has moved around – that has helped him get a full understanding of the offense.

Any bad blood between UM and Indiana? – No, go into each game with the mindset that they will work hard, study film, study the opponent, and do their best.

How is this year’s team different than the last two years? – Everybody understands what they need to do and guys have been stepping up. Denard, Stonum and other guys have really stepped up. The defensive secondary has really stepped up. Mike Martin is stepping up.

“25% Shoelace is faster than other players…let alone him being 100%”

It’s key to have Tate and Devin as backups, because they have experience and are skills. Tate is experienced and prepared, Devin has learned the system and is prepared as well.

Is the 1-7 conference record motivation? – It fires up the team to have doubters. They know what they have and how hard they work. The don’t look back, but do use it as motivation.

On how Denard handles all the accolades – “Denard is a really humble kid” They joke about how Denard doesn’t even realize how much the country is talking about him, he’s just so humble and is a great person. All positive. His humble nature has helped him become a leader as well as his work ethic.

His brother, Kevin, is working back home. Working on himself right now.

Feels extremely blessed to be playing for Michigan right now. Going to be graduating in December and will begin his masters. Just very happy to be part of this team.

Darryl Stonum…

Walks in with tape on the middle of his now famous thick-rimmed glasses. Has a black tie on with his Michigan polo.

On Kelvin Grady – he’s grown a lot, is a lot bigger. He’s blocking well, catching the ball well, doing everything he’s been asked to do. He’s more comfortable out there now.

It’s a lot of fun to play in this offense. You never know who is going to step up. It’s a lot of fun because the ball could go to any guy.

Going 1-7 last year in the Big Ten, it is motivation. References not swallowing the poison on any hype around being 4-0 again.

On why the team is poised this year – more together as a team, it’s a family atmosphere, and having fun on the field.

On Troy Woolfolk – always happy on the morphine (joke). But just wants to get back out on the field, he should be walking soon. He’s always yelling and screaming. He’s always at practice and is hungry to get back on the field next year.

No limits to the offense when it can execute.

Taylor Lewan…

Goal as a RS freshman is to start – feels great and blessed to be out there playing.

Had a helpless feeling when he couldn’t play last year – so it’s great to be on the field with the ability to change the game.

Working with Barwis has been great – helped with strength, speed, etc.

On being #77. Didn’t realize it was Jake Long’s number, had the number in high school.

Says that him and Craig Roh try and help get guys from back in Arizona to commit.

His favorite thing about Ann Arbor is the interesting people.

Again, the question about using 1-7 as motivation – echoed what Stonum said.

He’ll block just as hard for Tate and Devin as he will for Denard – hangs out with all of them.

Tries to play as mean as possible.

J.T. Floyd…

Indiana’s receivers are a talented bunch. They were last year.

The definitely remembers what it was like being 4-0 last year – and keep in mind what happened.

Stresses the importance of every game, no team will be overlooked.

The D was more focused this past week. Need to improve tackling, but had better focus and energy.

Ryan Van Bergen…

This year’s team is more mature than last year. A hungrier team this year going into the Big Ten schedule.

IU’s QB is playmaker and the Indiana line makes it tough to get back there.

On D – the play of Thomas Gordon has been huge in stepping in for Carvin Johnson.

On going against Taylor Lewan in practice – he’s a really physical guy. Told Taylor he’d never be a tackle at Michigan when he showed up as a freshman weighing 260. He’s done great and brings a lot to the table.

Taylor has good athleticism and the ceiling for him is really high.

On going against Denard in practice “you’re never going to see another Denard Robinson when you go against another team” Good for pursuit angles, but the D understands they won’t be playing against a guy like Denard.

It’s a common misconception that, as a defense, that if you play your assignments against Denard you can stop him. Defenses have to “cage him in like a rabbit”.

On Mike Martin – he’s so fast he usually beats the double team before it even gets to him. Has great ability to get off blocks and is unreal as a player.

Quick Q & A with a popular Bowling Green Falcon blog called Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba – and Grant from AZZ drops some knowledge on the BG squad this season and what Michigan fans need to lookout for this coming Saturday in the Big House. By the way, Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba is the Bowling Green battle cry if you didn’t know, I didn’t. Check the AZZ message board for more. You can find my responses to some of Grant’s questions over at his place here.

What’s the general feel about this BG team – after dropping 2 on the road, BG wins in a big way (on the scoreboard at least) against a Marshall team that took West Virginia to the wire?

The feeling from the Falcon Nation is that this is a solid team, with a lot of potential for growth! We’re very young (44 freshmen on the roster), and we expect to see growth each and every time out. The coaching staff is only in it’s second year as well, so the whole program is kind of going through a re-birth, if you will. I think the feel could best be described as understated optimism. We certainly don’t expect to run the table, but I think we expect to be in every game this season with a chance to win it… including Saturday in Ann Arbor.

It looks like that Marshall game was up and down, with the defense coming up with some big plays, was that a display of BG’s defensive prowess or just bad throws from Marshall’s signal caller?

I’d like to give the BG defense all the credit, of course, but if you watched the game, I think it was a bit of both. That being said though, no matter how big the mistake an offense makes, if the defense isn’t alert and poised enough to realize it and take action upon it, it’s just going to be a mistake… good defenses capitalize on those mistakes and turn them into turnovers, pick-sixes, and game-changers!
You know, there’s another point I really want to make regarding the Marshall game. BG went up 21-0 in the 2nd quarter. Late in the 3rd quarter, it was 28-all… I don’t think a BG team of the past 4 or 5 years would have won that game, but this team, this staff, and these young players stood tough, took advantage of the turnovers and were poised enough to take the game over and put it away. That’s very exciting to me… the buzz around the Falcon Nation on Twitter and on my website was “Here we go again…” as the lead slipped away, but it wasn’t “Here we go again” at all!

What’s the biggest strength of this team?

That’s tough to say. BGSU has been known for putting up a lot of points in the past, and we continue to be able to score and run up the yardage, but our defense looks stronger each time out as well. I think we have some great playmakers on offense with a couple of in Willie Geter and Kamar Jorden (who leads the nation in receptions). I still think our offense is our biggest strength, but with starting QB, Matt Shiltz, expected to be out with an injury on Saturday, we’ll have to see who steps up.

Who are the biggest playmakers on offense, and defense? that Michigan should look out for?

On offense, I think Kamar Jorden is the obvious answer, but my favorite player, Willie Geter is going to surprise you! He’s a smaller guy (5’7″ – 175lb) and has that ability those smaller backs have to make the cut that just leaves you shaking your head, but he also has some kind of weird ninja strength that allows him to drag packs of defensive linemen along with him…. With us being w/o our starting QB, keep an eye out for #1!! Ty Pronty is a Sr. wideout who can jump and make the dramatic catches too… plus his name sounds so good over the PA system… “TYRONE PRONTY!!”
On defense, we’re so young, it’s hard to say. I really like what I’ve seen from Freshman DB Booboo Gates. Eugene Fells can be a big playmaker too, and a team leader and captain.

After seeing Michigan struggle defensively against UMass – should BG have a heightened sense of confidence going into the Big House?

I think we approach this game like we approach any other non-conference game. I think our confidence comes from what WE do, not what we’ve seen others do. Will we be confident? I sure hope so… like I said at the start, I feel like this team’s confidence grows with each game.

I see BG is 29th in overall passing yards – and 111th in overall rushing – are those numbers true to the capabilities of this team and what you’re seeing on the field?

Yeah, we’ve been gaining ground through the air for the last XX years! lol Like I said though, watch out for Willie G! With our starting QB down, I’m really not sure what we’ll see. Our backup QBs are a sophomore and a freshman… we’ll see who gets the nod on Saturday, or if they’ll share duties.

Who on BG’s front seven does Denard Robinson and Michigan’s O-line need to key on as they try and get the ground game going early?

Denard *gulp* Robinson?? W-w-w-w-who is that??? I guess I’m worried most about our nose tackles… not because of their skills, I think the kids playing the position will be fine, and have the chops to play, but they’re so young. A big-time atmosphere might make them pretty vulnerable at the outset of the game.

Let’s hear your prediction – what’s your final score?

A late, come-from-behind 31-28 BGSU Falcon victory! Roll Along you BG Warriors!!!

[Beware: the dopest video of this young season that you may watch several times - watch it]
[ADD: Denard Robinson MGoBlue feature] – [More is good: Maize & Blue News Now]

Injury report and game details are on your right. Too many defensive players getting hurt. And FYI – I don’t list the guys that are out for the season – that being Jared Van Slyke and Troy Woolforker, more commonly know as Twoolf. To me, its seems as though Michigan gets a chance to catch it’s breath over the course of the next few weeks – or at least the next couple. At Indiana is absolutely not a gimme game by any means. The Denard-mania has been going full speed this week – and I have to admit, I’ve been eating it up. Michigan fans haven’t eaten in a while, and when you’re starvin’ like a mugg, you eat up when there’s some eats to be had.

The enormity and feel to the first two weekends for Michigan has been energy-intensive to say the least. UConn and Notre Dame were major challenges for this Michigan team and coaching staff given the mainstream media microscope placed on the entire program. And it seems as though Michigan can’t just win and have the win dominate headlines. There’s always a side story, whether it’s Tate not getting snaps and being second on the QB depth chart, or it’s a national obsession with one of the most likable players in recent college football history. Michigan now enters into a little stretch where they will actually be favored in a few games. UMass presents the feeling of “should be a blowout but James Madison and App State once upon a time did actually happen”. So if the first quarter is coming to a close and Michigan isn’t entirely dominant in all phases of the game – mild panic may set in and extreme paranoia sets in.

Because Michigan should dominate each offensive and defensive matchup – that particular breakdown got knifed this week. I want to see a handful of things happen this week…

On Offense…

Denard get his yards, break a couple big ones (throwing or passing), and get out of the game by late second quarter or after the first possession of the third quarter.

Tate and Devin both get a number of possessions.

Somebody, anybody, in the backfield have a good day and show playmaking ability. My guess is that RR wants to get the backs involved and take on the bulk of the rushes.

A big play in the return game – punt or kick.

More involvement of the tight ends – Koger and Webb haven’t seen the ball much in the first two games.

TDs’, but if forced to kick a field goal – I’d like to see it go through the uprights this time.

On Defense…

Absolute domination.

No deep balls of any kind get beyond the safeties.

Lots of guys play – a lead should get guys like Cullen Christian and Courtney Avery some good game experience as the lack of depth might offer them playing time later in the season.

Turnovers, more than one.

Significant pressure from the front 3, or 4.

Sacks.

Negative yardage plays due to chaos created in the backfield.

Weather Forecast

Hoping for a clean game from the skies. Might not work out that way.

What Riles and Nettles Thy Minds

I don’t know. Injuries mostly. It’d be great if Michigan could play a lot of guys this week and not have anyone get hurt. Should UMass have any measure of success on offense – I’ll worry because Michigan State and Iowa offensively >>> Umass.

If Michigan Wins – this is how it’s goin’ down…

Ha. If. If Michigan wins. Damn The Horror, or else if wouldn’t exist for a game of this nature. The Horror did happen, so it does. Michigan should run all over a UMass defensive line that had a total of zero collective starts before this season. I expect Michigan to gash UMass for big gains and average nearly ten yards per play throughout the course of the game, definitely the first half. UMass does have a decent tandem of running backs – one John Griffen who rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2009 while playing for Northeastern. Interesting note – both Hofstra and Northeastern dropped their football programs, and UMass collected the change so to speak. This should be a lopsided game, one that resembles last year’s Delaware State win more so than this years Connecticut win. I’m thinking…

Michigan 52 – UMass 13

[ADDITION - Awesome video feature on David Molk - must watch.]
Injury report and game details are on your right. So this is a big one. Michigan’s first road test of the season comes against a Notre Dame team that is prevalent on the media’s radar because of Brian Kelly’s debut season. Rich Rodriguez took a lot of pressure off of him and his team by winning comfortably a week ago – God I couldn’t imagine how much pressure he would be under if he hadn’t beat UConn. What a media annoyance that would have been for a Michigan fan. Vegas isn’t real sure what to do with this game, giving Notre Dame a similar edge (-3.5) they thought Michigan had last week against UConn.

Match-up Advantages

Michigan Pass vs. Notre Dame’s Secondary…
Last week Purdue threw the ball quite a bit against the Notre Dame secondary – completing 31 of 42 passes with a couple interceptions in the mix. I think Michigan has the slight advantage simply because the run game will nicely set up the passing game. If Denard can be accurate with this throws, he ought to be tossing to some open receivers as he was last week against UConn. There’s been a lot of conversation around how well RR’s spread offense sets up the pass – lots of references to the completely wide open receivers Pat White used to throw to (by the way, that’s my last mention of Pat White, I’m already tired of all the Denard comparisons). Slight Advantage (>): Michigan.

Michigan Run vs. Notre Dame’s Run Defense…
Denard needs to replicate his effectiveness this week in the run game, not necessarily his production. 29 carries is too many for Denard to sustain week after week – and it’s well documented that 20+ carries for the quarterback is not RR’s intention. My guess is that Denard gets near 20 carries if not more – he’s just too fast and too much of a threat to not get him carries – especially if it’s effective and getting Michigan points on the board. Notre Dame’s run defense should be stronger than that of UConn’s, but still one that I believe Michigan can exploit. Expect Mike Shaw and Vincent Smith to rotate in similar fashion to that of last week. I don’t expect to see Stephen Hopkins or Mike Cox make their first appearances until Michigan plays UMass at home next week. Based on one week and one week alone – you have to give Michigan a hefty advantage based on one Denard Robinson. Definite Advantage (>>>>): Michigan.

Michigan Pass Defense vs. Notre Dame’s Passing Game…
Dayne Crist played relatively well last week, but you could tell he is a guy that just hasn’t played too many snaps at this level.

Dayne Crist said “There were a couple plays where I thought I could have taken a little bit more of a chance,” Crist said. “But those come and go. Both plays that I’m thinking of we completed the ball, so it’s kind of a Catch 22 on that one.

“But those things will come. Again, I’m not worried about it. I’m not going to play scared or anything like that. I’ll do whatever is asked of me, and that’s how I’ve been since I’ve been here, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”

Reports on his play vary from extremely well to mediocre. Crist showed some poise and got the ball to his big play guy Michael Floyd – who could present big problems for an untested Michigan secondary. Michigan will most likely stick J.T. Floyd on Michael Floyd. The nature of last week’s UConn game allowed Michigan to hide their weaknesses in the secondary. If Michigan’s front seven can exploit ND’s young offensive line and get to Crist – Michigan’s secondary will have a much better chance to bend and not break. Advantage (>>): Notre Dame.

Michigan Run Defense vs. Notre Dame’s Running Game…
Armando Allen and the young freshman Cierre Wood looked very good in space against Purdue. I think this could pose some big problems or at least yield some big plays against Michigan’s front seven. The two guys combined for 151 yards against Purdue and looked pretty good doing it. This should be a huge test for Michigan’s linebackers Obi Ezeh and Jonas Mouton, who collectively didn’t have their strongest games against Jordon Todman and UConn last week. In my opinion, Michigan’s ability to stop Notre Dame’s running attack is a key to who wins this ball game. Advantage (>): Notre Dame.

Weather Forecast

So it appears as though it could be a wet one with some rain from the hurricane aftermath. If it plays a part in causing turnovers, as it did in the 2008 game, it’s absolutely a factor and I’m not sure who that favors. The default choice would be the home team – and again you can take what happened a couple years ago into consideration. Does it help or hurt Denard’s ability to run? Again, not sure because it could go either way, but my hunch is that it hurts the ND defenders more than it hurts Denard. Using his running style against UConn as a basis, his style of running is more vertical than it is horizontal, therefore, advantage Denard and Michigan…here’s your forecast as of 10am ET Friday morning.

What Riles and Nettles Thy Minds

Cautious optimism riddles the minds of Michigan fans because of last year’s post-4-0 collapse. I hate South Bend and the freakish turnovers that always seem to fall in the favor of Notre Dame – and with rain in the forecast – I think more of the turnover potential and impact it could have on the game. Notre Dame’s tight end Rudolph and wideout Floyd scare me, because they are scary good and both will be playing on Sundays in the near future. The mix of Michigan’s suspect D and Notre Dame’s talent in the backfield make me feel uneasy. If those guys get in space more than a few times – it could turn in to a long day for Michigan. If it comes down to the kicking game, I’m not all that confident in what Michigan puts out on the field.

On the other hand, Michigan might have a talent on their hands that is unlike anything else in college football. If Denard can duplicate what he did against UConn – lookout for one hell of an exciting day. Michigan seemed to show a collective team speed that wasn’t there a year ago. Michigan has weapons on offense that far exceed that of Purdue, who didn’t look all that bad against ND’s defense.

Notre Domers are confident because…

Well, they have a new coach and they think he’s the man for the job and he’ll navigate his team to victory

Michael Floyd

RR has one road win in his first two years at Michigan

Notre Domers are worried because…

It appears as though they may have some issues in defending the perimeter, which might incline ND to play a lot of nickel to get more speed on the field.

The defensive front didn’t get a huge push, at least consistently, against the Purdue offensive line. Michigan’s line is bigger and more experienced than that of Purdue’s.

Denard Robinson’s legs

Denard Robinson’s arms

Michigan fans are confident because…

Denard “Shoelace” Robinson wears #16 for the guys wearing those winged helmets.

Michigan, as a team, showed signs of improved ball security against UConn and wound up with a +1 in the turnover department.

Michigan’s team speed seems to be much improved

Michigan fans are worried because…

3-8 happened in 2008

5-7 happened in 2009

The Michigan secondary is freakishly young and inexperienced

If Michigan Wins – this is how it’s goin’ down…

Rain or shine – I think Denard Robinson is going to see a similar degree of success against Notre Dame as he did against UConn. Michigan may not sustain drives like they did against UConn, but offensively they should have a productive day. Michigan’s drives won’t stall nearly as often if Denard can continue to convert short and long 3rd downs – yielding more touchdowns than field goals. I think Notre Dame is going to have some success running the ball and using some play-action, but think they will stall inside the red zone and convert field goals. Michigan should have enough of an advantage on both the offensive and defensive fronts to control the line of scrimmage, which will minimize the effectiveness of Crist and his ability to get the ball downfield to Michael Floyd and Rudolph. Turnovers will play a role in this game, but I think both teams will give the ball up once or twice – more or less a washout. Michigan has too many playmakers and too much team speed for Notre Dame to handle. It’s close, but Michigan rides back to Ann Arbor with W #2.

Before Saturday, will be posting a 2010 Season Prediction and general outlook for the Michigan football program as it transitions from year three to year four since hiring Rich Rodriguez. I’ve already discussed how a nightmare of a season might unfold for Michigan and what a dream season could possibly entail – but usually reality trumps all – so on to reality my friends.

QB

The Sitch: This is the magical unit in the Rodriguez spread style offense, but if you ask me, that’s an overused statement because it holds true in every offense. As the opener approaches, it’s becoming apparent that the coaching staff is feeling comfortable with the play of Denard, Tate and Devin. RR saying all three may play and that Devin will not be redshirting as he is mature enough both physically and mentally.

When I analyze these three guys, especially Tate and Denard, I have a hard time making judgments on what happens during spring and fall practice as opposed to what I’ve seen in games. The spring game is just too different from a game for me to fully put stock in the hype around Denard. No question, he needs to be on the field in some capacity. If you didn’t know, he’s kinda fast. If Denard is the starter and if he indeed does take the majority of the snaps, it’s because of the followings: he has a better grasp of the playbook, his accuracy / confidence throwing the ball is much better / higher, and his decision making is waaay improved as a product of knowing the playbook and having more confidence.

I live near Cincinnati, so I answer to a bunch of wannabe truck driver buckeye fans regarding why Denard is starting over Tate, Tate is transferring because it’s what they do in that family, etc. It doesn’t really matter, at all, who takes the first snap and first couple series against UConn. I agree with Angelique Chengelis that the Michigan fan base and college football world has made way too much of who gets the start.

What to Expect: Denard Robinson will be taking the first snaps against UConn – put that one in the bank. My best guess, after seeing all the interviews, press conferences, spring game, beanie bowl highlights, etc. is that Denard will get a 2-5 series leash before you will see Tate get in the ball game. From that point it’s a feel thing for Rich Rod – so whichever guy looks most promising up against UConn’s defense is the guy that is going to stay in the game. Expect to see Devin in the ball game if Michigan creates some separation on the scoreboard, but don’t put any coin on him seeing the field if this game is remotely close. RR will have to side with the guys that have more experience even if Devin is playing up to Tate and Denard’s level.

Running Back

The Sitch: Without a sure starter coming back, there’s a bit of speculation as to who is going to stand out and get the bulk of the carries when it counts. Both guys with some game experience will most likely get the first cracks at it, Mike Shaw and Vincent Smith. Smith is going to be used more between the tackles and Shaw on the outside. Smith has the shiftiness and some of that knack that Mike Hart had to always get a few more yards than you think he will. Shaw has really not lived up to his potential yet. He’s a guy with great speed, but lacks consistency and doesn’t have much power whatsoever.

The guy that a lot of people are ready to see is Mike Cox. Mike is a guy that has had good moments in clean up duty and is regarded as the best overall athlete of the group. Should Mike prove to be a gamer, he could add some real depth to this group and barring injuries, give RR a solid three to four guys to feel comfortable with in the backfield.

What to Expect: Vincent Smith is your starter against UConn, but Mike Shaw, Mike Cox and Stephen Hopkins are all very likely to see some carries. I look for Vincent Smith to emerge as the most consistent back on read option runs because of his ability to squirt through the big guys up front. Smith had no problem snagging 4 to 7 yards on first down for most of his touches against Ohio State last year – so more of the same is to be expected this season. Getting a 1,000 yard rusher out of this group would be great, but I don’t see it happening.

Wide Receiver

The Sitch: This is no doubt a talented group with a ton of game experience. One surprise that came out of camp was RR sticking Martavious Odoms on the outside. A move warranted by Odoms’ knowledge of the system and his physical nature. Stonum has had an outstanding fall camp and is primed for a breakout season (with a new vision thanks to some contacts).

Hemingway is a guy that has looked great at times, but can’t seem to stay healthy. It’s hard to expect a lot of him simply because he hasn’t really proven himself after two seasons being a starter going into the opener. I think he has the potential to be a solid contributor.

What to Expect: Stonum is going to have a big season on the outside as Michigan’s only real deep threat, not to mention his proven ability to return kickoffs. If Odoms can stay healthy, he’ll be a mainstay on the edge as his ability to block is critical for several plays going to the slot. If any of the young guys need to step up, expect Je’Ron Stokes and true freshman Jeremy Jackson to get their shot.

Slot Receiver

The Sitch: Roy Roundtree was straight up a receiving beast over the last four games in ’09. Roundtree is fully expected to top the group when it comes to both leadership and production. He’s a dude that is quickly becoming a favorite among both the local media and fans. Kelvin Grady looks positioned to also see more time on the field this season over last, but he is another guy that has yet to truly prove himself in a game situation. Perhaps, with a year under his belt of being fully committed to football he will be a better player and performer.

I think it’s fair to assume that Terrance Robinson might have a slight edge on Jeremy Gallon, but both guys have been highly touted and have a lot of talent. It will be interesting to see if one of these guys emerges and takes playing time away from Grady.

What to Expect: Homeboy Roundtree is going to have a great season. He’s shown great body control, ball control and route running ability and is a self-proclaimed hard worker and has said several times that he’s looking to play with that “Hard Edge”. Look for Grady to get his shot, with T. Rob and Gallon on his heels all season.

Wait ‘n see on – Brandin Moore

Tight End

The Sitch: As long as Koger and Webb stay healthy, this will be a strength for the Michigan offense. Koger has shown some flashes of brilliance, but has also been inconsistent. Assuming he’s matured as he is another guy that’s been in the system for three years now, Koger is a high-potential guy. While the tight ends aren’t used in the spread as much as in the pro-style offense, RR has said several times that tight ends are generally used in about 70% of plays. Martell Webb is a solid backup that brings some experience to the table and will see the field a lot this fall.

What to Expect: Kevin Koger to have a fantastic year, but he still won’t see more than two or three balls thrown his way per game. Michigan has so much talent on the outside and in the slot, not to mention the guys behind center, that the tight ends may get neglected a bit. Of course, the opposite may ring true, Koger and Webb might get more open if the slots and wide receivers are garnishing more attention from opposing defenses because of their success. Tight end is always a tough position to forecast from a reception productivity standpoint. Definitely a position of strength for Michigan this season.

Offensive Line

The Sitch: Finally, Michigan has an experienced offensive line under Rich Rodriguez. A lot of these guys have been in the program all three years and now have a boatload of game experience. Steve Schilling alone has started in 36 games out of 37 in his career at Michigan. David Molk might be the most important guy on this entire offense. Things really began to fall apart in 2009 after Molk went down once and then again in the Penn State game. You’ll find many people that feel Molk’s injury combined with Forcier’s shoulder injury were the difference of a few games last seasons.

You’ve got young guys like Taylor Lewan pushing older fellas like Perry Dorrestein and Mark Huyge. Patrick Omameh has looked great and performed relatively well when his number was called last season. The group as a whole is much bigger and stronger – they have been Barwis-ized so they have put on the muscle mass while maintaining their agility.

What to Expect: The O line will probably be Michigan’s deepest unit and it should be the key to an extremely productive offense. RR will be able to shuffle fresh legs in and out through the course of a game and should someone go down – there’s a quality, experienced back up that can step without the offense missing a beat. The collective starts of the entire unit from 2009 adds up to 37 – the experience gained, not to mention the strength and bulk gained in the offseason, all amounts to a group of guys that have had opportunities to grow and gel as a cohesive unit.

This is the second post of a little series of three – examining Michigan’s 2010 nightmare, dream and probable season outcomes.

Michigan’s 2010 squad is a unique product and nobody really knows what to expect out of this team and this coaching staff. This isn’t 2008 or 2009, right, it’s the 2010 season. You’re best off taking the little good from both previous seasons and moving on to something that will most definitely be better and more fun to watch. Hence, some renewed optimism is in order and serious hope that Michigan fields a team that fills up the win column a hair more aggressively than the previous two seasons. Massive turnarounds do happen – and it could happen with the Wolverines in this 2010 season. Should this be a massive turnaround, a complete out of this world dream season, here is how I see it playing out.

The Dream Begins…

Connecticut.
I see Michigan coming out in fine fashion as a riled up crowd enjoys the dedication game of the newly renovated Big House. Similar to last season’s opener, Michigan looks sharp in all phases of the game and it takes Connecticut a while to get anything generated on offense. My guess is that Tate takes the field as the starter and Denard is on the field in some capacity. After Michigan gets a couple scores on the board it only takes RR a couple series to put Denard behind center. It’s a glorious day at Michigan Stadium and a massive sigh of relief is felt from the Michigan fan base as a whole. Dream Record: 1-0.

@ Notre Dame.
I’ll go out on a limb and say ND picks up an opening win against Purdue. So both teams are fired up and ready to start the season 2-0. This is a close game and still has those WTF strange turnovers from both teams. Michigan goes through a second and third quarter lull that allows Notre Dame to get up by about a field goal. In the fourth quarter Michigan’s experience on the offensive line proves to be the difference in the game as Michigan keeps the ball on the ground for a couple late scores to seal the deal. Michigan ‘escapes’ with a huge win in South Bend to get the season started on a very high note. Dream Record: 2-0.

Massachusetts.
Michigan is feeling good after hurdling two tough opponents. The starters take off the first half of the first quarter before putting a number on UMass. Michigan’s starters are able to hit the sideline after the first couple possessions of the third quarter. Michigan wins in a blowout. Dream Record: 3-0.

Bowling Green.
The fear of the let down. No longer can Michigan ever overlook an opponent, especially a MAC team like Bowling Green. Bowling Green keeps it close for most of the game and loses any hope with some costly turnovers after a well-played first half. More of Tate and Denard splitting snaps with Denard doing his best to get the starting gig as it’s not settled after three games. More and more it appears as though RR will game plan and play either Tate or Denard in spots dependent upon the opponent. At any rate, the squad gives the fans plenty to cheer about on a great Saturday. Dream Record: 4-0.

@ Indiana.
Even in a dream season scenario, I still think Michigan has it’s problems with Indiana. Much like last season, Indiana’s offense has more firepower than most realize. Indiana is able to move the ball and put points on the board. Tate gets most of the snaps and Michigan is able to squeak out a nail biter – and once again, the Indiana fan base feels like their game against Michigan slipped right through their fingertips. Dream Record: 5-0.

Michigan State.
Dream season or not, Michigan State is not beating Michigan three years in a row with two coming in the Big House. It just ain’t happening. State talks a big game in the week leading up to the contest and it backfires on them. Michigan comes out fired up and lays the wood to MSU in a big way. Tate and Denard both shine as Michigan State’s offense struggles to get into any type of rhythm all day. The dream season continues. Dream Record: 6-0.

Iowa.
At this point, Michigan has garnished some national media attention for snagging their sixth win and a guaranteed bowl birth. They are ranked right around the 10 to 15 range – and a win against an established Iowa squad is sure to put Michigan in the top ten. Unfortunately, Iowa’s defense and ground game prove to be too much for Michigan to overcome. Michigan’s first loss comes on their home turf against the Hawkeyes in similar fashion to what went down a year ago at night in Iowa’s place. Dream Record: 6-1.

@ Penn State.
After suffering through the first setback of the season, this is where it’s clear that this is a different Michigan team than we’ve seen in the Rich Rodriguez era. Laying down and dying after a tough loss has been all too common over the last couple years. Not this season. This is a different team, a more experienced team, and a deeper more talented team. Michigan goes into Happy Valley as an underdog and shocks the Nittany Lion crowd in a great night game atmosphere. My guess is that Michigan puts up nearly 30 points and holds Penn State’s pedestrian offense to under 200 yards – a breakthrough game for the young Michigan D. Dream Record: 7-1.

Illinois.
With Michigan coming off its most influential win of the RR era – a rowdy Big House crowd cheers on a solid performance from Denard. Illinois puts up a great fight as there aren’t many Big Ten games anymore that aren’t flat out dogfights. This is another game the plays into the trend of Michigan pulling way in the latter stages of the second half via a defense that creates timely turnovers and an offensive line that proves it’s worth as games wear on. Michigan gets a big home win and shows that they remain focused and aren’t ready to give in to any type of letdown. Dream Record: 8-1.

@ Purdue.
Damn that Ross Ade Stadium. I don’t have great memories of Michigan playing at that place, but I do often remember Shazor the Razor’s vicious hit in the waning minutes as Purdue looked poised to at least get into field goal range and wipe away Michigan’s 16-14 lead. Michigan’s offense sets the tone in this game with a balanced attack that allows some of Michigan’s receivers to get into the action. Jeremy Gallon has a breakout performance and shows that he is a quality punt returner in this one. Michigan notches another victory as RR gets another rare Big Ten road win. Dream Record: 9-1.

Wisconsin.
For once, I think Wisconsin will live up to the hype they are receiving during the preseason. Usually, Wisky seems to beat up on their weak non-conference foes, snag a top ten ranking and then falter throughout conference play. This is a team that Michigan will struggle with because of their size and strength up front. While it will feel like one of those games that Michigan should win – and will most likely be favored in – Wisconsin escapes with a narrow victory. A disappointment absolutely, but it’s only loss #2 and the Wolverines will have a huge game the following week against the Buckeyes. Dream Record: 9-2.

@ Ohio State.
So Ohio State comes into this game with somewhat of a disappointing season as they’ve dropped a game to Miami and another unexpected Big Ten game. Michigan comes off a disappointing loss to Wisconsin, but spirits are high as they’ve had a great season. Michigan’s offense uses every inch of the field and really spreads out the Buckeye defense. In similar fashion to a year ago, the offense moves the ball well and plays a turnover free game – allowing them to put points on the board and pick up some early momentum. Pryor has a great game himself but loses a fumble in the fourth quarter that allows Michigan to get that last score they need to go up nine – a difference that Ohio State is unable to overcome. The win makes it a great, unbelievable turnaround season for the Wolverines and positions them for a BCS bowl at large bid (damn Wisconsin wins the Big Ten title). Dream Record: 10-2.

The Odds of The Dream Happening?

After the last two seasons, it’s hard to imagine Michigan firing off a ten win season and beating Ohio State on the road in late November. BUT, you know you never know. Stranger things have happened. You can bet that at this time next season – the forecasts for this team will be sky high with all the experience on D and at the skill positions. Perhaps it comes a year earlier than expected? My my wouldn’t that be nice.

I’d give this about a 12% chance of happening. And that 12% is a number that came from an intense, highly analytical mathematical breakdown. Worry not my friends, it’s a whole new season and Michigan hasn’t lost a game yet!

This is the first post of a little series of three – examining Michigan’s 2010 nightmare, dream and probable season outcomes.

With a clean slate in both the win and loss column – August tends to distribute rather overwhelming optimism and pessimism among fan bases across the country. Hence, I delve into the depths of the mere possibility of an absolutely terrible 2010 season for Michigan. If all goes wrong and the team can’t seem to pull it together. If there appears to be little offensive and defensive improvement, the losses will begin to pile up quicker than a Denard scamper.

The Nightmare Begins…

Connecticut.
This game has been talked about all summer as a very difficult opener for Michigan. Facing a confident team that has experienced success in each of their last three seasons. The Nightmare starts with Michigan struggling all day to move the ball consistently and the all too familiar upside down turnover ratio going against the Wolverines. Michigan winds up keeping it close but struggles all day and loses a close one. The fan base is uneasy after a not so stellar outing in the opener and the season begins at 0-1. Nightmare Record: 0-1

@ Notre Dame.
Notre Dame opens their season against a Purdue team that could very well beat them, so both teams could be heading into their second game feeling a hair desparate for a big win. I think this season’s game in South Bend will be a typical rivalry game – neck and neck with a few WTF type turnovers from each team. Should Notre Dame beat Michigan, Brian Kelly catches Michigan off guard with some play calls that Michigan simply isn’t prepared for. Michigan, again loses a close game for the second time over two September Saturdays. Nightmare Record: 0-2

Massechussetts.
Well, the 0-2 Michigan squad gets a breather at home against a team that even Michigan’s 2008 team led by Nick Sheridan would have eased by. Nothing feels better about the season even with a royal beatdown of Umass. Michigan wins by at least three touchdowns and the Michigan faithful limp on to another week of practice. Nightmare Record: 1-2.

Bowling Green.
The thought and fear of another loss to a MAC team is there, and let’s not beat around the shrubbery, it’s a frightening thought. Michigan looks less then steller and gives up way too many yards to Bowling Green’s offense. Fortunately, Bowling Green can’t handle either Tate or Denard as they split time (as we all know will happen regardless of who starts any particular game) and put enough points up on the board to make the win look respectable on the ticker. Nightmare Record: 2-2.

@ Indiana.
Last year’s win against the Hoosiers was one of those games that pretty much sucked to watch. At that point, Michigan’s defense hadn’t truly been exposed and the team showed it’s first real signs of the meltdown that would come as the season pushed on. Michigan will walk into Bloomington hoping to add another notch to the win column, however, Indiana has different thoughts in mind. The Indiana offense again abuses Michigan’s defense and a couple costly Michigan turnovers gets Indiana enough on the board to stave off a late Michigan rally led by Forcier. Nightmare Record: 2-3.

Michigan State.
At this point, Michigan fans are ready to throw Rodriguez to the streets as the preseason optimism lingers in fans minds and all wonder if it’s possible to get this thing turned around. Afterall, it’s still early October with a lot of season left to be played. Michigan puts together a solid performance for the first time this season and takes full advantage of a couple early Michigan State blunders. Michigan gets its hopes back up after their best game of the season. Nightmare Record: 3-3.

Iowa.
Iowa enters the Big House on a roll with an unblemished record and a top ten ranking. This game will be much like last years, where Michigan competes but is never really out front and never really looks as though they are better than Iowa. While it’s a good game, Iowa’s defense proves to be too much for Michigan to ever establish anything positive on the ground – Iowa’s offense does enough to get 20+ points on the board by chewing up yardage and the clock with a solid ground game. Nightmare Record: 3-4.

@ Penn State.
Michigan comes into the game with a proclaimed renewed focus after a solid week of practice. Much like many of the games in 2009, Michigan can move the ball and the offense looks great at times, but as the game progresses Penn State seems to be the more dominant team. Michigan does not produce any big plays and it’s inexperienced kicking game misses a couple key field goals. Michigan leaves Happy Valley quite discouraged as it seems like this was just another one that slipped away in the latter stages of the game. Nightmare Record: 3-5.

Illinois.
With the season looking a lot like 2009, Michigan’s chances of getting to a bowl game seem to be less and less likely as the losses pile up. A Juice-less Illinois team strolls into Michigan Stadium hoping to get a big win as Illinois is having a terrible season. Michigan plays up to par as they did against Michigan State earlier in the season and gets another solid, turnover-free performance out of all three units. Michigan still is hopeful to get to a bowl game and finish the season on a high note. Nightmare Record: 4-5.

@ Purdue.
What the hell is it about Ross Ade Stadium – because over the years Michigan has really struggled to come out of there with wins. Just this week, the Big Ten Network was playing the 2000 game, where a Drew Henson / David Terrell / Anthony Thomas led offense blew a 28-10 lead against the Drew Brees led Boilermakers. Much of the same to be expected here, a high scoring affair that leaves Michigan with a sour taste and rotten bus ride back to Ann Arbor. Some Purdue player is sure to have a career defining game. Michigan goes down. Nightmare Record: 4-6.

Wisconsin.
Wisconsin comes in not living up to the preseason top fifteen type expectations everybody set in August. That being said, Wisconsin takes advantage of some sloppy quarterback play from Michigan as a frustrated Rodriguez shuffles both Denard and Tate in and out of the game – hoping one of them will perform. Michigan loses a stinker and a low scoring game on a dreary November day. Bowl hopes again – dashed. Nightmare Record: 4-7.

@ University of Ohio State.
Well, once again Michigan is faced with a “well if we beat Ohio State down in Columbus it will almost make up for everything that went wrong all season.” As nice as that sounds – it ain’t happening. Ohio State is too solid in all three phases of the game and the game is almost a direct repeat of 2009. Michigan moves the ball, but doesn’t have enough firepower to look like the better team on the field or the scoreboard. Nightmare Record: 4-8.

The Odds of the Nightmare Happening?

There is about a 8% chance the season plays out this way. While I won’t totally discount it, and using history as a guide, Michigan should at the very least be on par with last season and most likely show marked improvement. BUT, you never know, as we thought the seasons and product on the field were mere impossibilities before the 2008 and 2009 seasons actually happened.

Worry not my friends. ANYTHING can happen – but I don’t foresee the Nightmare becoming part of our reality in the near future.
