This post is part of a little August series on the 20 Most Memorable Michigan players of the past twenty years – basically going back to 1990. Don’t forget my friends, these are my memories…and beef if you must once we start getting down to the wire and you sense an oncoming omission. Previously: (20) Chris Floyd, (19) Marquise Walker.

#9 Mercury Hayes

1992-1995
Position: Wide Receiver / Kick Returner
Hometown: Houston, TX
Career Stats: 124 receptions, 2,144 yds, 12TDs

Hayes came to Michigan by way of Houston – and was recruited by Colorado, Florida State, USC, and Arkansas. Hayes was a four-year player that spanned the QB eras of Elvis Grbac, Todd Collins, Scott Driesbach, and Brian Griese. Is that not a decade of Michigan quarterbacks right there?

First Play That Comes to Mind

Big number nine came through Ann Arbor just as I was in that ten to twelve years old range. At the time, I’m sure I had no real perspective or understanding around what the Michigan football program was going though in losing Head Coach Gary Moeller that off season. At the time, Moeller was earning a $130,000 salary as the head coach. Needless to say, coaches be makin’ a little more scratch than that these days.So as the story goes, me the kid is upset that Virginia is pitching a shutout as the 4th quarter starts. Meanwhile, the entire Michigan fan base is mired in this extended scene of drama that began with the episode that led to Gary Moeller’s resignation and Lloyd Carr’s interim status as the head coach.

There was a lot riding in this game. A forgotten tumultuous time for the program.

This was a tone-setter for that 1995 season – not coming back from 17 down wouldn’t have set up for a pleasant week two in Carr’s coaching career. Michigan makes the comeback and is faced with an opportunity at the end of the game. Saying it was an opportunity is being mad generous too.

Michigan has one play left in the game, it happened to be a 4th & 10 with four seconds left from about the 15 yard-line…. Roll the tape…

That was sweeeeeet. That call totally could have went either way. And to think – there was no challenge, no question once those referee arms were raised up high.

On Deck?

Who is going to be #17? In the decade of the ’90′s, his 90-yard touchdown reception stood as the longest completion in Michigan history until it was surpassed by Mario Manningham’s 97-yard TD against Wisconsin in 2007.

Photo cred goes to Spawn of Mzone.

Injury Report
As stated over on Mgoblog, the injury report this week is Mcguffie-licious – as in full of concussed players. Actually just Carlos Brown and Tate Forcier are listed as probable with a 75% chance of playing. Zac Johnson is still out with a shoulder injury and David Molk is still out with this quickly healing but not quite ready yet foot.

Ricky Leach Gets Mad
Not to change the subject or anything, but the injury report brings usually nothing we don’t already know – here’s something that you don’t hear everyday. Ricky Leach called in to the Michigan Insider on WTKA today and talked to Sam Webb and Ira about Lloyd Carr, his attendance at the Iowa game and his general stance of silence on Rich Rod’s Michigan program. Leach said that Lloyd had “flipped a huge middle finger” at RR and what he is trying to do in this program.

First, I think Leach is taking this a bit far. He has been very vocal about his support for what Rich Rod is doing with this program and let’s the world know how he feels. I think he is still bitter that Lloyd never came out and gave even an ounce of support for the program before this season started. It’s easy to see why people interpret Lloyd’s silence as a sign of no support – and you have to wonder. If Lloyd had great respect and truly liked Rich, you would think that he’d vocalize it at some point in time. To me it’s a non issue. The program is what we care about as Michigan fans and the program is in the hands of Rich Rodriguez. I have respect for Lloyd Carr, his philosophies, and what he did for the Michigan program. Change is here and the transition has been made. No need to get all worked up about something that really doesn’t effect the program a great deal.

The QB Sitch Against Delaware State
I’m guessing Denard Robinson gets the start this week against Delaware State. If Tate plays, maybe he goes for the first couple series in the first quarter and that’s about it. I think you’ll see Denard play for a solid 2 to 3 quarters and Sheridan / Coner will get the rest of the time. This from RR on Thursday…

“If Tate’s cleared and he’s 100 percent and he’s able to do all the practices this week from Wednesday on, then he’ll be the starter,” Rodriguez said. “But we feel confident in Denard (Robinson), and Nick Sheridan’s had a great week of practice. He’s ready as well.”

In the midst of a very long month – waiting for college football season to begin – here’s something to think about besides how the next CNNSI reporter blows a Rich Rodriguez comment into something way bigger than it really is on how he’ll play quarterbacks this season. I’ve put together Michigan’s best season from 2000 through 2008 starting with the opening game for the past nine years. So it’s Michigan’s best season by considering each set of Week 1 games, Week 2 games, etc. Don’t forget to comment on how you’d change it up…

Week 1 – Washington at Michigan – VIDEO
Michigan beats the Washington Huskies on opening day at the Big House. I can remember walking back to the car assuming sure defeat – then the horns. People were dancin’ on their horns because Michigan puts an improbable field goal through as time expires for the victory.

Week 2 – Houston at Michigan – INFO
This wasn’t exactly a great game – although now I’m sure every Michigan fan would take ANY blowout. But if you look at Week 2 games – there are lots of losses and ugly wins sprinkled in throughout – two to ND, two to Pac 10 teams, bad wins against MAC teams, etc.

Shawn Crable

Week 3 – Michigan at Notre Dame – VIDEO
This was a game where just about everything went right for Michigan and it was a great day all around. Henne to Manningham three times in the first half alone. Brady Quinn couldn’t keep his face mask clear of grass. This gave that 2006 team so much confidence and some swagger.

Week 4 – Wisconsin at Michigan – HD VIDEO
The lone bright spot of the Rich Rod’s first season at Michigan. The greatest comeback in the history of Michigan Stadium. The first half was just a waste of everyone’s time – the offense blew, and I mean real bad. But things got going late in the third quarter with some help from Wisconsin and before you knew – Michigan is winning 27-19 and pulls out the W 27-25.

Week 5 – Michigan at Michigan State – VIDEO
MSU came into the game 4-0 and favored in the game for the first time since 1968. Michigan winds up getting a 21-7 lead before MSU came back to tie the game. Michigan then gets up 31-24 and midway through the 4th quarter a Henne fumble gets picked up and taken to the house. Rivas ends up hitting a field goal in OT to win the game.

Week 6 – Michigan at Penn State – VIDEO
The first overtime game ever at Michigan Stadium. If you watch the video, you’ll see that there are a number of plays where the refs miss some calls that did not help Michigan in any way. Michigan winds up down 13-7 at the end of the third quarter. Michigan then gets jobbed out of what was clearly a pass interference on Braylon Edwards. Nevertheless, Navarre ends up hitting Edwards on a fade pattern in the left side of the end zone. PSU gets up again 21-14 and Michigan ties and and gets the W in OT.

Need I say more? In a season where Michigan had injuries and losses. They spoil Penn State’s season by beating them on the last play with only one second remaining on the clock. What a sweet moment it was.

Week 8 – Michigan at Iowa – VIDEO
A gutsy comeback in Kinnick Stadium against the Hawkeyes of Iowa. The boys in blue were down 13 in the second half and things were looking rather ugly. The offense couldn’t get anything going all day until late in the 2nd half. Marquise Walker makes one of the most spectacular catches I’ve ever witnessed. Great win on the road.

Braylon Edwards

Week 9 – Michigan State at Michigan – VIDEO
Halloween weekend + MSU up by 17 with 7 minutes to go in the forth quarter = hammered me. Who knew Braylon would have the greatest game of his college and professional career that afternoon. A late game in OT make for an epic scene with darkness setting in on Michigan Stadium. Michigan had problems stopping MSU all day, but in the end Henne threw up enough flyballs to Edwards to get a classic overtime victory.

Week 10 – Michigan at Michigan State – VIDEO
Michigan comes out of the gates playing well, but eventually finds themselves down 24-14 midway through the forth quarter. Henne throws one of the best passes of his career to Greg Matthews in the corner of the end zone to put the Wolverines down 3. A quick stop from Michigan’s defense and Henne takes the boys back down field for an eventual beauty to Mario Manningham for the win.

Week 11 – Penn State at Michigan – VIDEO
Not a whole lot to choose from when considering Week 11 games. This was a solid victory led by Drew Henson, Anthony Thomas and BJ Askew. The 4th straight win in a row over Penn State – who would have thought that streak was going to last all the way up to 2008.

Week 12 – Michigan at Ohio State – VIDEO
Let’s see. One opponent fills Week 12. The win in 2003 was great at home. Gotta go with Michigan’s last road win in Columbus. Enough said.

Bowl Game – Michigan vs. Florida – HD VIDEO
A great way to send off Lloyd Carr in his final game on the sidelines. A back and forth game that saw Mike Hart fumble twice, Chad Henne make some unbelievable throws, Adrian Arrington make some sick catches, Mario Manningham come up big, and Jamar Adams LIGHT up Tim Tebow a couple times. Michigan has owned the SEC in recent years, unlike ugly down in Ohio.
With Donovan Warren being the only true starter coming back at cornerback. This spring Warren had to get some surgery on his ankle where he apparently had some out-of-place bone chips. Returning starter Stevie Brown is no longer playing back at the Safety position as got burned in plenty of games the last two seasons. He’s a guy that everyone seems to always have high expectations for and this coming season is certainly no exception. Brown will be playing new defensive coordinator Greg Robinson’s “quick” position – which is like a roaming linebacker providing more run support, blitz options, and the ability to cover man-to-man on a slot, end, back, etc. Nevertheless, I’m looking for Warren to step it up this season and be a leader for a very young secondary.

Speaking of Stevie Brown – in an article in The Detroit News – he is out to find his identity this season and show the world that he is an asset to Michigan’s defensive unit.

Lloyd Carr sounded off a bit at a question and answer session at the annual Motor City Bowl golf outing. Good ol’ Lloyd expects Michigan to have an exciting season and win some games in 2009…

“I’m like everybody else, I’m hoping and expecting a very successful, exciting season.”

And continues his stance on not interfering with what Rich Rodriguez is doing in his second year as head coach.

“One of the decisions I made when I retired as the coach was that I was not going to be a guy that stuck my nose into the new coach’s job because there’s enough pressure on the coach at Michigan as there is in any sport,” Carr said. “And to have the former coach going to practice and commenting on all the questions that would be asked, just in my mind was not in the best interest of Michigan football. And my love is for Michigan. I want the best for our university and for our football program”

Michigan’s crowd and stadium noise always seems to be a topic of conversation at some point in time during every off-season. What needs to happen to make Michigan Stadium louder? Why aren’t there ever any night games? Will the new stadium construction make it louder – won’t the sound bounce down from the angled press boxes and suites? These are all questions that Michigan fans want addressed in some capacity. Rich Rodriguez has been stirring up the pot a bit recently about changing some things in the Big House. Rodriguez is going as far as working with Michigan’s marketing department to address some of these issues. It shouldn’t be hard should it – I mean you’ve got 110,000 fans to work with!
Here’s what Rodriguez had to say relative to why Michigan doesn’t have any home night games….

“I think ESPN would love us to do that,” Rodriguez said. “I think some of our fans would like it, not a lot of them. But I think some would like it. I think we’d entertain it more if we had – lights in the stadium is not an issue, but lights in the parking lots.”

Over at <a href='http://umgoblue.com/absoluteig/gallery.asp?categoryid=1259'about='_blank'>UMGOBLUE.COM there are some new pics of the indoor practice facility that is going to replace Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. Per the <a href='http://freep.com/article/20090714/SPORTS06/907140370/1048/'about='_blank'>Free Press it looks like it might be named after Al Glick – a man who donated $8.7 million for the facility.

<a href='http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=73499&Sport=1'about='_blank'>Austin White, the three star running back out of Livonia, MI is going to announce his decision today and it looks like it’s between Michigan and Michigan State. White has received offers from LSU, Alabama, Notre Dame and a handful of Big Ten teams. White’s brother Myles is currently on the Spartan roster in East Lansing – and he also had a brother named Mitchell who was kicked off the MSU team. White seems to be leaning towards UM – based on his interview at <a href='http://mgoblog.com/content/interview-austin-white'about='_blank'>MGOBlog.

As expected, Michigan’s O-Lineman <a href='http://www.mlive.com/broncos/index.ssf/2009/07/wmu_lands_heralded_lineman_dan.html'about='_blank'>Dan O’Neill is transferring from Michigan and going to Western Michigan. O’Neill will be playing along side his brother – a tight end at WMU.

Lastly, is it almost September already?! Once we hit August and practices start time will fly and we can start polishing up our tailgating gear for this season, make sure our DVR is ready (I cancel cable from January through August – so this applies to me) and hope RR and the boys can turn it around!

So when is the last time Michigan has had an offense that CONSISTENTLY put up at least 35 points. Michigan offenses have came into seasons heralded as top in the country, but typically the performance on the field doesn’t quite live up to the hype. Nothing against Lloyd Carr, but dynamic wasn’t exactly his favorite expression when it came to the playbook. Clumsy offensive play typically led to long third downs and too many stalled drives for the talent that was out there on the field. Now, last year’s offensive display was THE WORST I could have ever imagined – after having so much confidence and built up excitement going into the Utah game. That’s what you get when you start a quarterback that literally was incapable of moving an offense forward down the field. Seriously, think back to the Penn State game. It was 17-17 late in the third quarter and Sheridan had to relieve Threet and you just knew that the offense had literally no hope of moving forward. Anyway, enough on Sheridan and inept play at the position, I want to get at what this offense could be with the right athletes. Not only will it be exciting, we are going to see speed and depth at the skill positions like never before. An opened up playbook that will give Tate – or whatever athlete that is playing behind center – options on every play. Like Tate was quoted in saying that in this offense there should never be an incompletion. Let’s hope he can at least be around or above 60% completion.

Bottom line: when the system is working . NOBODY will want to play Michigan. And I’ve said it before, I want the Big House to be a place where teams dread coming to. It’s time to get some serious winning streaks started in the big house….
