Typically the Monday press conferences are aired live on mgoblue.com, but with today being the holiday and all it is not being aired. Nevertheless, the joys and freedoms of the internets still gives us the general sense of what’s being said from Hoke and the players interviewed.

The majority of the below gets credited to the following twitterers: @umgoblog, @chengelis, @mvictors, and @mikerothstein.

The order of what was said is by no means reflected below and I’m sure you could dial up some patience and mgoblog will have the transcripts up at some point today.

Brady Hoke

Hoke said they won’t practice at night this week.

Hoke on what Michigan can improve…starts listing stuff: “This could be a marathon.”

Hoke – Denard made good decisions

We need to do better staying on blocks downfield, wrs need to not break off routes.

Hoke: “Rushing for 190 yards in three quarters of the game, that was a good thing.”

Hoke said the defensive packages they played Saturday determined Courtney Avery start at corner. Herron start was defense design/Cam injury

Hoke said Schofield and Barnum will compete at the LG spot this week to start.

Hoke said he anticipates both Cam Gordon and Woolfolk playing Saturday.

Hoke said they’ll have an “honorary senior captain” every game. Van Bergen was for game 1

Hoke: kickoff coverage will be a focus, as well as XP/FG teams

Hoke, on Notre Dame: “This is a great rivalry game.”

Hoke on whether offense tried to keep vanilla for ND: says they’re “going to do what it takes to win.”

Nd is a talented team hoke recruited some of their players at sdsu

Hoke- Re headphones – I like to listen on defense and on offense depending on the situation

Hoke- re countdown clocks – osu and msu are conference games. nd is important.

Hoke asked for his most memorable ND game – cited 1997 game, and the multiple stops in the red zone

Hoke on ND quarterback questions: ” To me it doesn’t change anything in our preparation.” Doesn’t think it changes ND offense at all

Update on Woolfolk’s ankle: “It felt better yesterday..”

Hoke: “I like how Al calls a game.” Likes how he changes things up in the course of the game. … Had a ton of different formations Game 1

Hoke on liking night games: “No. But I have no say, which is okay, too. But I do like 12 o’clock games. And so do you guys.”

Hoke on night games: “It’s a long day.” Has them take walks, etc.

Ryan Van Bergen

people don’t realize how bad it sucks waiting in the hotel all day

Van Bergen is wearing a blue Michigan polo with maize trim. Above the block M it says “senior.” Under it it said “Team 132.”

Van Bergen: Likes night games but doesn’t like waiting all day, watching all every football game

RVB: “One that comes to mind is Iowa. That was a really cool experience. … I don’t know why, but it does seem like it’s more electric.”

Rvb- we as a defense need to get pressure with 3 and 4 men rushes, can’t depend on blitzing

what’s it’s like for the def to score- unexpected and exciting

David Molk

Molk: “It’d be kind of cool where we had no preparation at all. Just go and react.” Yep, that would be fun.

Molk expects the big house to be crazy Saturday night

Good to get first game nerves out of the way

For the 2010 season I will be posting a summary from each Monday and Wednesday press conference as it happens. It’s essentially a regurgitation of several twitter feeds from those that are fortunate enough to have jobs that entail them being at the pressers. Here we go…

I will be updating below as I get more info…

On the depth chart…

The depth chart is out. X is Stonum or Hemingway. OL is Huyge, Schilling, Molk, Omameh, Dorrestein. TE is Koger. Y is Roundtree / Grady. Z is Odoms. At QB – all three are listed.

Starters at CB are JT Floyd and James Rogers

More starters on D – DE is Ryan Van Bergen. NT is Mike Martin. DT is Greg Banks. OLB is Craig Roh. MLB is Moundros or Ezeh. Weakside LB is James Mouton.

Carvin Johnson is listed as the Hybrid on the depth chart. SS is Kovacs and FS is Cam Gordon. (Can’t say that I expected to see Carvin Johnson on the depth chart as the Hybrid – Interesting)

Carvin Johnson and Punter Will Hagerup are the only two projected starters that are true freshman

Rich Rodriguez…

Devin Gardner not going to redshirt. “prob going to play”

All three QBs may not play in opener, but can see all three playing during the year. Devin will probably not redshirt

On playing all 3 qbs in opener: “don’t know yet. See scenarios of all three playing during the season”

Tackling well is the biggest key defensively against UConn on Saturday. Wants to see guys on the ground

RR: Schemes in Big Ten and Big East are similar. Big East is “underrated as far as talent.” Big Ten has more tradition

Freshmen on depth chart will likely not redshirt. Gardner is on depth chart

RR: “More confident offensively.”

“there’s not a whole lot of our guys touted for anything” right now. He hasn’t talked specifics about many players

Rodriguez says he has an idea which QB is going to start, but coaches might not know

About how he’s going to tell QBs, Rodriguez: I don’t need some Dr. Phil moment with the (QBs)

RR on Gardner not redshirting: “Devin is mature mentally.”

“Next few days will sort exactly what our gameplan will be.” In regard to Qbs

Toussaint is questionable this week

RR expects UConn to take “deep shots” early on, maybe first play of the game

On players’ nerves on Saturday, “Big Jonny will probably have to bring some extra pairs of pants” (laughs)

Roy Roundtree…

“have to wait ’till Saturday” to see what QB throws the best ball

Roundtree on the anticipation for the unveiling of the renovation, “It’s going to be wonderful”

“I don’t think no team on our schedule is a warm-up game”

On RR – “He never lied to me like other coaches did”

Steve Schilling…

Schilling on what offense does best: “We hope to do everything well.”

On Tate, working really hard and he’s “excited to see what he can do this year”

More on Tate: “Gained a lot of respect back for Tate.”

Darryl Stonum…

Darryl Stonum: Devin (Gardner) throws probably the fastest ball. He’s a Brett Favre type (of QB)

Too Funny… I had to add this in here. Watch this back just give up on this play.

Notes from what RR is saying up at the podium:

RR on Minor’s shoulder: “It’s concerning. It’s his shoulder now. Talking to trainers, it’s day-to-day.”

On Carlos Brown – knee is still bothering him a little bit.

RR on OSU: “If you coach and play here and, you understand this rivalry every day.” “Legends are made in the Michigan – Ohio State game”

RR on Pryor: “I think he’s done extremely well.”

RR on the defense: “We’re still constantly evaluation” “Still searching for the right combination.”

RR: “Most important for us the next couple Februaries is signing” some defensive help.

RR on simulating Pryor difficulty: “6-6, runs a 4.3″ “If I had a guy like that, he probably wouldn’t be on the scout team.”

RR on what a win would mean for him and the team: “More than anything for our seniors, they haven’t beaten Ohio State yet.” “And bowl game possibility.”

RR on Justin Boren: “I don’t know if it does much good to go back in the past.” Then talked about closeness of his “family”

RR on all this losing: “It eats at your soul” “I don’t coach football. I live it.”

RR continues to elaborate on the losing: “I’ve lost before. I’m not used to this. My staff isn’t used to this. It gnaws you to the bone.” “For a lot of reasons, it has been more challenging and more taxing. But you have to stay true to yourself and your family.” “We’re going to be back there where I want us to be and everybody wants us to be.”

RR: “We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes when you’re losing, it’s hard to see that.”

RR on whether he is happy with the coaching staff: “I feel very good about our staff. We have great people on our staff” “What I have to do is evaluate what we’re doing scheme-wise.”

RR on certain unique issues: “There are a couple issues that come up that aren’t in coaching 101.”

RR on his system fitting at Michigan: “What would be the difference between fitting at Michigan and fitting at West Virginia or somewhere else?”

RR on Tate and Denard: “They’ll be so much better once we get more sessions with them.”

RR talking more about OSU and saying that his first day on the job, before his introductory press conference, got a beat Ohio State button. Still on his desk.

RR: “I’m going to give you a newsflash here. I’m going to coach as hard as I can every game.”

RR on the rivalries: “Isn’t that what’s fun about college football?” – then goes on to say that the 1969 game is what really stood out to him before he came to Michigan.

My apologies for the less than thorough notes on what Rich Rod had to say – I was unable to watch – so your updates are from various twitter sources. Ryan Van Bergen steps up to the podium after Rodriguez.

Injuries coming out of the game:

Brandon Minor – Shoulder Bruise

Junior Hemingway – Back Issues

Tay Odoms – Day-to-day – not recovering as quickly as they had thought.

Notes:

Tate was solid but had a few reads he’d like to have back

Felt comfortable offensively – need to do a better job of finishing off drives

On Woolfolk’s comments about being confused out there – “That’s disheartening”…goes on to say that the team isn’t good enough to overcome those mental mistakes

On playing bad in the 2nd half – no real trends, just a matter of playing better.

Asked if the players are out of shape – RR: “Do we look outta shape?” “No”

Onside kick was executed very well – ball is live once it hits the ground and they did a good job of taking out our player

On halftime adjustments – you only have 5 or 6 minutes with coaches and the same with the players to talk about adjustments

J.B. Fitzgerald played ok, but “no player on defense had a championship performance”

On the 4th & 10 – RR: “biggest concern was that we were not stopping them”

RR on LB’s: “Been ok, but have had some moments of disappointment” “want to eliminate the biggest mistakes”

RR has been to play at Wisconsin during his first year of coaching at West Virginia – said they have a great atmosphere

On playing Wisconsin: “Great challenge but also a great opportunity”

On Defensive Coordinator change: “I really like the chemistry of our staff and the players have bought in, but the production isn’t where we would like it to be” “Our guys are trying as hard as they can and there isn’t just one reason that we aren’t having success”

RR on players resiliency: “It’s a good group of guys” “Guys aren’t happy when we get beat, but we want the players to be able to bounce back come Monday and Tuesday of the next week”

“The best way to feel better after a loss is to move and do what you can to win the next one”

The university as well as RR’s staff isn’t used to losing and it’s not a fun process, but the staff isn’t daunted by the challenge

Brandon Smith is somewhat caught between two positions – was recruited as safety but will probably eventually play at the linebacker position

On recruiting services and paying attention to the star ratings – RR: “you have to use your own judgment” …and goes on to say that you can’t dismiss a guy because he may only be a 2 star

RR mentions guys like Jeremy Gallon – who else has forgot about that name?? I sure did…

RR on bowl opportunities – “They know a bowl game is in sight, it should give some motivation”

The players on the scout teams know that they are always being evaluated. You can tell throughout the course of the season who is going to contribute in the near future

RR on Denard: “I talked to him today about not getting him in the game” ..he has a great attitude and that Denard is very understanding and is a team player

Denard’s running play could have been huge if it wasn’t for a missed assignment

RR on Tate since Notre Dame: “He’s had more positive moments than negative moments – Still very much a work in progress and has to learn a whole lot” “I told him last week that he must act, play, and behave older than he his:”

RR on playing at Camp Randall: “We’ll do more this week on crowd noise and get our guys ready for that” “Communication is the biggest thing on not only offense but on defense too”

RR: “if you do the right job in recruiting, two and three years from now you won’t see many freshman playing” “that’s the way you build a program and that’s the process that we are in”

RR on scheduling Boise State: “4 or 5 years down the road we are open to a lot of things” “we haven’t heard from them”
